- This term refers to a marriage performed in accord with the laws of the state. In the United States, a churchmarriage is considered binding in civil law; thus, a civil marriage is an alternative to a church marriage and is not consideredvalid for Catholics by the Church. However, in some countries, civil laws require a couple to have a civil marriage before a marriage in church; in these countries, the Roman Catholic Church requires the civil marriage to be followed by a church marriage.
